time travel : november
Time travel is a monthly newsletter where we listen to one song from each decade (60s to 020s) picked by me, your left airpod that just sucks.
Good Morning!
I’ve been hibernating, what did I miss? Okay not gonna lie to you, I almost didn’t release a newsletter this month but because this is the closest I’ve been to finishing what I started so I gathered some of the most interestingly sounding tunes that almost made it to past playlists. We have some instrumentals, some psychedelic rock and even some art pop.
60s: In The Past - The Chocolate Watchband
We are starting off with some psychedelic rock from the 60’s with The Chocolate Watchband’s cover of In The Past (originally from We The People). I do like their take of it a little more than the original because of the overall psychedelic instrumentation, but if you are more into 60’s garage bands definitely check out the original version.
Try my friend loving all, the things we used to love
I realize there was not very much to love
but that's no reason, to go on living in the past
70s: Sketch For Summer - The Durutti Column
I’ve been obsessively listening to the entire discography of The Durutti Column since I listened to this song. This one is from their debut album “The Return of The Durutti Column”, ironic, I know. It starts with the lovely bird sounds that they managed to get into the synthesizer in the recording studio and then throws a fantastic guitar solo by Vini Reilly for the rest of the track. Who cares if it’s autumn.
80s: Doy Doy Doymadin - Şenay
I can’t even remember how I got to this album but it’s fascinating. Şenay Yüzbaşıoğlu is a Turkish singer but I can’t find a lot of information about her online (at least not in english/spanish). Her music is a mix of turkish folk and rock, often referenced as Anatolian rock or Turkish psychedelic rock. The funky bass and flutes are a whole treat in this one.
İstanbul'dan çıktım yola Konya' da verdim mola
Yedi bölgeyi dolaştım
Yedi bölgeyi dolaştım
Tüm insanlar kardeş ona
90s: Thinking Of You Thinking Of Me - Bogdan Raczynski
I found Bogdan in an old issue of Muzik Magazine and although he is known for his IDM tracks inspired by hardcore rave this is a short dreamy interlude that’s less than a minute long and real fans would probably drag me for adding it.
00s: Smile The Day After Today - Black Moth Super Rainbow
Another nice instrumental by the Pittsburgh-based electronic indie rock band Black Moth Super Rainbow. This album is way more accessible and conventionally melodic than their most famous one, Dandelion Gum.
10s: The Season - Ela Orleans
Looped synth melodies, muffled guitars and reverbed vocals that result in a hypnotizing experimental pop song that is part of a compilation of Ela Orleans’s early demos called “Movies for Ears”. It gives you the feeling of being either underwater or in a really foggy club and I love it.
I have waited so long
that at length I forget;
And leave unto heaven
My fear and regret.
20s: Dust - Marxist Love Disco Ensemble
One of the bands that debuted this year was MLDE, a band that gives a modern twist to a retro sound. Described as “Soviet-era disco pop” this album is equal parts playful and politic.
