time travel : july
Time travel is a monthly newsletter where we listen to one song from each decade (60s to 020s) picked by me, your left airpod.
Good Morning!
We’re at the peak of summer and most of my energy these days goes solely into surviving the heat wave, so this month we’ll freshen up with some breezy tunes. There’s some psychedelic rock and funk, synth pop and even electronic reggae, the only thing missing is a big glass of cold water, so go get it and press play.
60s: Try My World - Georgie Fame (1967)
Even though Georgie Fame is known as a jazz and r&b musician the melody and low vocals of this single from 67’ sounds like a captivating blend of gloomy sunshine pop, as contradicting as that sounds, and I love it.
Try my world
Cause I know it's gonna please you
There will be no lies
You can open up your eyes
And walk right into my world
70s: Sports Men - Haruomi Hosono (1978)
Perfect synth pop from one of its pioneers. In this song Hosono sings about wanting to be stronger or better so he can deserve his partner’s love. A cute song that will put you in a hypnotic trance.
People say I'm weak
Can't even hold her tight
You are the star of the poolside
Your streamline curves I can't abide
80s: Fly Away / Walking In The Sunshine - Laid Back (1983)
An easy listening summer tune from the reggae-loving electronic music duo from Copenhagen. And you can trust that there’s no false advertising with this one when it comes to song title and band name.
Everybody
Is looking for the real thing
It's you all the time, you all the time
My mind is on you
It's you all the time, you all the time
90s: The First Taste - Fiona Apple (1996)
As a little birthday treat for myself I chose a song from my favorite singer songwriter, Fiona Apple. This track is from her first album, Tidal. I remember listening to it for the first time and being surprised by the unexpected mix of latin and middle eastern sound influences.
I lie in an early bed, thinking late thoughts
Waiting for the black to replace my blue
I do not struggle in your web because it was my aim to get caught
But daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary
Of waiting to be consumed by you
00s: KOI GA SHITAI - Yura Yura Teikoku (2003)
Sweet psychedelic rock from japanese band Yura Yura Teikoku. They released twelve studio albums from ‘92 to ‘07 before its founder Shintaro Sakamoto went on to pursue his amazing solo career.
*translation*
Why don't birds sing a song?
I'm in love now, look at those eyes
Why don't the flowers and grass dance?
I'm in love now, look at those eyes
10s: Kamikaze Mushroom Palace - Kainalu (2019)
Psychedelic funk project by Trent Prall. His music is influenced by his Hawaiian and Japanese heritage and it always has that ‘spending the night by the ocean' feel. This is from their first album and they're currently working on their next one.
I like to think
That I've got shit worked out better
Than I used to
But I let myself get mixed up living
Through the day by day
20s: Cajuína - PPJ (2022)
Newly released single from the collaboration project between parisian musicians and producers Paula, Povoa, and Jerge. Cajuína is a flavorful electronic track that sounds and feels like the summer heat.
Cajuína, eu te quero muito bem
A música salvou minha vida
Nós estamos aquí juntinhos
Tô afim de te bagunçar, cajuína
Tô afim de te procurar, cajuína
